Summer Heat Drives HVAC Duct Upgrades: A Guide to VMPET Metalized Film Duct Facing
As the Northern Hemisphere enters peak summer, central air-conditioning and ventilation systems in public buildings, commercial complexes, hospitals, cleanrooms, and data centers are running at high capacity. Continuous heavy-duty operation places stricter requirements on the reflective performance, aging resistance, and flame-retardant grade of flexible duct outer jackets. As a key functional material for the outer layer of flexible air-conditioning ducts, metalized polyester film (VMPET) duct facing is seeing a new wave of application demand.
1. Seasonal Demand Peak: Summer Stress on Duct Outer Layers
The summer operating environment is far more demanding than winter. On one hand, the temperature difference between cold air and hot ambient air causes heavy condensation on duct surfaces; without a dense barrier layer, the metal shell corrodes rapidly. On the other hand, machine rooms and ceiling plenum spaces are enclosed, and accumulated heat keeps the outer layer at 60–80 °C for extended periods, causing ordinary coatings to chalk, blister, and peel. VMPET (vacuum-metallized polyester film) uses biaxially oriented PET as the base film. The vacuum-deposited aluminum layer forms a mirror-grade reflective surface that reflects more than 85% of infrared radiation, significantly reducing heat absorption and making it an ideal outer-layer material for summer air-conditioning ducts.
2. Three Core Performance Advantages of VMPET Duct Facing
First, high reflectivity and low heat absorption. The aluminum layer can be controlled to a sheet resistance of 1.5–3.0 Ω/□, achieving over 85% reflectance in the 380–2500 nm infrared band, which effectively reduces duct surface heat gain and lowers the cooling load of the air-conditioning system.
Second, strong laminate stability. The PET base film provides high tensile strength and a wide temperature range from -40 °C to 150 °C. When laminated with non-woven fabric, aluminum foil, or PE film, the interlayer peel strength remains high, allowing the material to withstand repeated summer-winter thermal cycling without delamination.
Third, lightweight construction. The typical basis weight of VMPET ranges from 25–50 g/㎡, far lower than pure aluminum foil laminates, contributing significantly to overall duct weight reduction and easing installation in high-rise ceiling spaces and compact machine rooms.
3. Key Selection Indicators for Summer Procurement
For HVAC system integrators, summer sourcing should focus on: aluminum layer uniformity (no visible color difference or pinholes), reflectance (≥ 85% in the IR band), peel strength (≥ 4 N/15mm), temperature resistance (-40 °C to 150 °C), flame-retardant grade (B1/B2, with third-party test reports), and environmental compliance (RoHS, REACH). In high-humidity southern regions, an additional PE or CPP moisture barrier is recommended on the outer side of the VMPET to prevent mildew during the rainy season.
4. Hongcheng Technology's Supply Capability
Hangzhou Hongcheng Technology specializes in the R&D and production of aluminum foil composite materials and PE lamination composites. Our metalized polyester film (VMPET) duct facing series is one of the company's most mature product lines, available in 25–50 g/㎡ basis weights, mirror and semi-gloss finishes, and multiple colors (silver, gold, champagne) in roll form. Standard widths are 1.0–1.55 m, with OEM slitting supported. We accommodate both small trial orders and large-volume stable supply, offering HVAC system integrators, flexible duct manufacturers, and export traders a complete solution from raw material supply to technical support.
Summer heat is still in full swing, and the demand for retrofitting and newly installing energy-efficient air-conditioning and ventilation systems continues to grow. Hangzhou Hongcheng Technology will continue to provide global customers with reliable aluminum foil composite materials and metalized polyester film duct facing products, backed by consistent quality and flexible service.
