    1. Market Growth and Shielding Requirements for Heating Cables

Heating cables (also known as electric heat trace cables or self-regulating heater cables) generate and distribute heat along their entire length, serving applications such as underfloor heating, pipe freeze protection, roof de-icing, industrial process heating, and agricultural greenhouse climate control. Driven by rising underfloor heating adoption in residential construction, cold-chain infrastructure investment, and industrial pipeline freeze protection demand in cold climates, the global heating cable market has posted double-digit annual growth over the past five years.

Within the multi-layer structure of a heating cable, the shielding sleeve serves two primary functions: electromagnetic shielding to prevent radiated emissions from interfering with nearby electronics, and mechanical/moisture protection to extend the cable's service life in damp environments. The performance of the shielding material directly determines the cable's EMC compliance and on-site installation durability.

Three main shielding approaches are used in heating cables today: braided copper wire, plain aluminum foil winding, and AL/PE (aluminum foil + polyethylene) composite winding. Among these, AL/PE foil laminate is increasingly replacing copper braid and plain foil due to its combination of shielding efficiency, moisture barrier performance, and cost advantage — making it the preferred choice for both domestic and export-oriented heating cable manufacturers.

    2. Typical Structures of AL/PE Shielding Laminates

AL/PE foil laminate is produced by dry-bond or extrusion-lamination of an aluminum foil layer with a polyethylene (PE) film. Different cable performance requirements call for different laminate constructions:

Structure 1: Standard AL/PE (two layers)

    • Aluminum foil: 7 μm or 9 μm industrial-grade pure aluminum; shielding effectiveness ≥40 dB @30 MHz
    • PE film: 15–25 μm, acting as an insulating substrate to prevent direct contact between foil and inner conductors
    • Total thickness: approximately 22–34 μm
    • Applications: standard indoor underfloor heating cable, low-power heat trace tape

    Structure 2: AL/Conductive Adhesive/PE (three layers)

    • Conductive acrylic or pressure-sensitive adhesive layer ensures electrical continuity across overlapping foil laps, forming a continuous shield
    • Better grounding stability; compliant with standards such as IEC 60800
    • Applications: industrial pipe freeze protection, high-wattage heat trace cable

    Structure 3: AL/Scrim/PE (reinforced composite)

    • Glass fiber or polyester scrim between foil and PE layers provides mechanical strength
    • Significantly improved tear and puncture resistance; total thickness 60–100 μm
    • Applications: direct-burial heating cables, exterior building thermal de-icing systems

Hongcheng Technology supplies all three constructions. Foil thickness options: 6–12 μm; PE thickness: 12–30 μm custom; slit width: 25–1500 mm with ±0.3 mm tolerance.

    3. Key Technical Parameters to Evaluate

When sourcing AL/PE shielding laminate for heating cables, focus on the following specifications:

Shielding Effectiveness (SE, dB) Aluminum foil typically achieves 40–60 dB SE across the 30 MHz–1 GHz range — more than sufficient for the power-frequency (50/60 Hz) operating range of heating cables. In practice, electrical continuity at the lap joint matters more than foil thickness. A conductive adhesive layer is critical to maintaining high SE at overlap seams.

Peel Strength (N/15 mm) Interlayer peel strength between foil and PE determines resistance to delamination during the mechanical stress of high-speed winding. Hongcheng's dry-laminated AL/PE achieves peel strength ≥1.5 N/15 mm, supporting automated winding line speeds up to 30 m/min without delamination.

Moisture Barrier (WVTR) Heating cables are often installed in wet environments — under floor screed, in soil, or on exterior pipework. Aluminum foil has an inherently low water vapor transmission rate (<0.01 g/m²·day), and the PE lamination further enhances moisture resistance for reliable long-term performance at 85% RH.

Temperature Resistance The shielding sleeve must withstand the cable's continuous operating temperature (typically 65–90 °C) and short-term peaks during installation (e.g., heat-shrink tube application >120 °C). HDPE or crosslinked PE is recommended to minimize creep at operating temperatures.

Slit Width Accuracy Heating cables in various diameters require different winding tape widths, typically 25–100 mm. A slit tolerance of ±0.3 mm or tighter is essential to maintain consistent overlap ratios on automated winding equipment.

    4. Technology Trends: LSZH Requirements and Advanced Composite Designs

As building fire safety codes (GB 31247, IEC 60332) impose stricter flammability requirements on cables, Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH/LSHF) heating cables are gaining rapid market share. Traditional PVC outer jackets are being replaced by LSZH thermoplastic elastomers, and the PE layer in shielding laminates faces parallel pressure to migrate toward halogen-free PE alternatives (such as polypropylene or aluminum hydroxide-filled PE compounds).

For heating cables targeting European markets, compliance with RoHS 2.0 and REACH regulations is mandatory — restricting phthalates, heavy metals, and other substances of very high concern (SVHC). Hongcheng Technology's AL/PE laminates are manufactured using food-grade PE resin and can be supplied with SGS/ITS third-party test reports confirming RoHS and REACH compliance.

A further trend in the premium underfloor heating segment is the demand for self-adhesive shielding laminates that allow quick, tool-free positioning without heat-shrink tubes or tie wraps. Hongcheng offers AL/PE foil laminate with conductive pressure-sensitive adhesive backing, enabling simultaneous electrical grounding and mechanical fixation — streamlining on-site cable assembly.
