    Kraft paper with PE Coating

    PE coated kraft paper is a packaging material that combines the advantages of natural fibers and polymer materials, consisting of a base paper layer (kraft paper) and a polyethylene (PE) coating. This structure endows it with multiple excellent properties, showing strong adaptability in the packaging field and being widely used in food, industrial, electronic and other industries.

    The base paper layer usually uses 100-300g/m² sulfate wood pulp kraft paper, which has high proportion of virgin fibers (≥80%) and burst index of 2.5-4.0kPa·m²/g, providing a solid mechanical foundation for the material. The surface-coated PE layer, with thickness controlled at 15-30μm, is tightly combined with the paper base through extrusion coating process, with peel strength exceeding 3N/15mm, ensuring no delamination after repeated folding. This composite process enables the material to retain the stiffness and printability of kraft paper while gaining the chemical stability of PE, forming a synergistic effect of complementary functions.

    Waterproof and moisture-proof performance is one of its core advantages. The PE coating, with a molecular density of 0.92-0.96g/cm³, can effectively block the penetration of liquid water and water vapor. Tests show that its water resistance pressure reaches 15-30kPa (according to GB/T 465.2 standard), and water vapor transmission rate is below 5g/(m²·24h). In humid environments such as fresh food delivery packaging, it can maintain the internal relative humidity at 40%-60%, reducing the loss rate of fruits and vegetables due to mildew from 15% to below 5%. Even in cold chain environments at -10℃, the PE layer remains flexible and will not lose its waterproof function due to low-temperature embrittlement.

    Oil resistance makes it an ideal choice for food packaging. The non-polar structure of PE molecules can resist the penetration of animal and vegetable oils, with oil permeability below 0.1g/(m²·24h) (tested according to ASTM F1115 standard). When used for packaging fried foods (such as potato chips and fried dough sticks), it can prevent oil leakage from contaminating the outer packaging while maintaining the crispy texture of the food. In the fast food industry, hamburger boxes made of this material show no oil migration within 2 hours after 65℃ heat preservation test, with oil resistance 80% higher than that of ordinary kraft paper packaging.

    Corrosion resistance provides reliable protection for metal products. The PE coating has broad-spectrum resistance to acids and alkalis, with stable chemical properties in the pH range of 2-12, and can resist erosion from sweat and mild corrosive gases common in industrial environments. When used for packaging hardware parts, it can control the rust rate of metal surfaces below 0.5%, especially suitable for warehousing and transportation in coastal high-salt-fog areas. Experimental data shows that steel screws packaged with PE coated kraft paper have only 1/20 of the rusted area compared to unpackaged samples after 6 months of storage in an environment with 35℃ and 90% relative humidity.

    Antistatic properties expand its application in the electronic field. By adding 0.5%-1% antistatic agents (such as quaternary ammonium compounds) to the PE coating, the surface resistance of the material can be stabilized at 10⁸-10¹¹Ω, meeting the ESD protection standards of the electronics industry. When used for packaging precision components such as chips and resistors, it can effectively dissipate static charges, reducing the scrap rate of components caused by electrostatic breakdown from 3% to below 0.1%. This property makes it widely used in temporary packaging in semiconductor production lines.

    Aesthetic performance is enhanced through modification of the PE coating. High-gloss PE coating has a 60° angle glossiness of 30-50GU, changing the surface of kraft paper from matte to translucent texture, improving packaging grade; while matte PE coating can reduce fingerprint residue, suitable for high-end gift packaging. The natural brown tone of the base paper layer combined with the transparency of the PE coating allows 4-6 color exquisite patterns through gravure printing, with printing adhesion not falling off after tape test, meeting brand display needs.

    In terms of mechanical properties, its longitudinal tear strength reaches 800-1200mN, and transverse folding endurance exceeds 50 times (MIT method), able to withstand the high-speed operation of automatic packaging lines (up to 300 meters/minute). In heavy-duty packaging scenarios, such as outer packaging of building material pipes, kraft paper with 80μm thick PE coating can withstand the impact test of 50kg 重物 without breaking, reducing weight by 30% while maintaining the same protective ability when replacing traditional cartons.

    Environmental attributes comply with sustainable development trends. The base paper part can be 100% recycled for repulping, and the PE coating can be converted into fuel oil through pyrolysis technology, with an overall recovery rate of over 90%, meeting the EU EN 13432 compostable standard. The version with bio-based PE (derived from sugarcane ethanol) coating has a carbon footprint 60% lower than traditional PE and has passed the food contact safety certification of the US FDA. In e-commerce packaging, this material can replace non-degradable plastic bags, fulfilling the environmental commitment of "plastic-free packaging".

    The segmented applications in different industries are diversified: in the food industry, 25μm PE coated kraft paper used for bread bags can withstand 120℃ heat sealing temperature, with sealing performance meeting shelf life requirements; in the industrial field, 50μm thick heavy-duty PE coated kraft paper is used for cable winding packaging, with both moisture-proof and wear-resistant properties; in agriculture, the balance between its air permeability and waterproofness makes it an ideal material for seedling pots, which can be naturally degraded without polluting the soil.

    With the development of technology, functional PE coated kraft paper continues to emerge. The antibacterial version with nano-zinc oxide has a 99.9% inhibition rate against Escherichia coli, suitable for fresh meat packaging; materials with cross-linked PE coating have improved temperature resistance up to 120℃, and can be used for outer packaging bags of microwave-heated food. These innovations keep its annual growth rate in the packaging material market above 6%, making it an important environmental solution to replace traditional plastic packaging.
