    The rapid expansion of hyperscale data centers and smart building infrastructure has placed unprecedented demands on LAN cable performance. As Cat6A and Cat7 deployments accelerate globally, the aluminum polyester composite tape—commonly known as AL/PET shielding tape or aluminum mylar tape—has become a critical raw material in ensuring high-frequency signal integrity and electromagnetic compliance in structured cabling systems.


    1. Why LAN Cables Need AL/PET Shielding Tape

    Ethernet transmission relies on high-frequency differential signaling through twisted pair conductors. In the Cat5e and Cat6 era (100MHz and 250MHz respectively), the twist geometry alone could manage crosstalk for most deployments. However, as Cat6A (500MHz) and Cat7 (600MHz) have become standard for high-density environments, unshielded twisted pair (UTP) can no longer adequately suppress alien near-end crosstalk (ANEXT) or external electromagnetic interference (EMI).

    Two main shielding architectures have emerged:

    • FTP (Foil-shielded Twisted Pair): A single aluminum foil composite tape wraps the entire bundle of four twisted pairs, providing overall EMI protection. Suitable for Cat5e through Cat6A.
    • STP/PiMF (Shielded Twisted Pair / Pair in Metal Foil): Each individual twisted pair is independently wrapped with AL/PET tape before an additional overall shield is applied. This is the standard architecture for Cat7 and Cat7A, effectively eliminating inter-pair crosstalk.

    In both architectures, the AL/PET composite tape performs a dual function: the aluminum foil layer reflects and absorbs electromagnetic energy, while the polyester (PET) film provides mechanical support, electrical insulation, and dimensional stability through the cabling process.


    2. Common AL/PET Composite Tape Structures for LAN Cable

    Three main structures are used in the LAN cable industry:

    Single-side AL/PET (Aluminum Foil + PET Film) Aluminum foil is dry-laminated onto PET film, with the foil side facing inward toward the conductors. This is the most widely used structure for FTP cables from Cat5e through Cat6A. Typical specifications: aluminum foil 6–9μm, PET film 12–23μm, total tape thickness approximately 18–32μm.

    Double-side AL/PET (AL + PET + AL) Both sides are aluminum foil, offering higher shielding attenuation at frequencies above 500MHz. This structure is preferred for Cat7 STP individual pair wrapping, where shielding effectiveness typically exceeds -75dB at 100MHz.

    Vacuum Metalized PET (VMPET) A very thin aluminum layer (0.02–0.05μm) is deposited onto PET film by vacuum metallization. Extremely lightweight and thin, but with significantly lower shielding effectiveness compared to solid foil structures. Primarily used in low-cost Cat5e and Cat6 products.

    3. What Cat7 and Cat7A Demand from Shielding Tape Suppliers

    As the STP architecture requires independent pair-level wrapping with tight geometric tolerances, AL/PET composite tape manufacturers face increasingly stringent technical requirements:

    Slitting Width Precision STP construction requires each tape strip to match the conductor diameter and lay length precisely. Industry standard tolerance is ±0.3mm; high-precision applications specify ±0.1mm. Width deviation beyond tolerance creates gaps in the foil overlap, leading to shielding discontinuity and crosstalk failures during high-frequency testing.

    Lamination Bond Strength (Peel Strength) During high-speed cabling, the tape undergoes repeated bending and tension. Delamination or blistering breaks the conductive continuity of the shield. Accepted industry minimum is 1.5N/cm peel strength (premium grade: ≥2.0N/cm), with retention of ≥80% after thermal aging at 80°C for 168 hours.

    Pinhole Rate Control Pinholes in aluminum foil are a manufacturing reality. Thinner foils carry higher pinhole risk, which directly compromises shielding layer integrity. For direct pair-level wrapping in STP cables, 9μm foil is preferred over 6μm; 6μm foil is generally acceptable for the overall outer shield in FTP construction.

    Surface Resistance Uniformity The bare aluminum surface resistance affects the conductivity between the shield and the drain wire. High-frequency applications require ≤0.01Ω/□, with uniformity variation not exceeding 10% across the roll width.

    The demand for AL/PET shielding tape in LAN cable applications is tracking strong growth trajectories across multiple market segments:

    Hyperscale Data Center Build-out Global hyperscale operators continue to expand capacity at pace, with Cat6A becoming the default structured cabling standard for new server room deployments. High-density data centers increasingly specify Cat7 for intra-rack connections where minimal crosstalk and EMI immunity are critical.

    Smart Building and Campus Network Upgrades New commercial and industrial buildings in China are specifying Cat6A as the baseline horizontal cable, while legacy buildings undergoing intelligent retrofits generate steady replacement demand. The EU's Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) revisions are driving similar upgrades across European markets.
