How to Determine the Thickness of Composite Aluminum Foil Bags?
In the packaging field of food, pharmaceutical, electronics and other industries, composite aluminum foil bags have become the preferred packaging solution for many enterprises due to their excellent barrier properties, puncture resistance and fresh-keeping ability. However, as a composite aluminum foil manufacturer, we have found that many customers often feel confused about thickness selection when customizing, mainly because they are not familiar with the multi-layer structure characteristics of composite aluminum foil bags. After all, composite aluminum foil bags are made of multi-layer materials such as PET, aluminum foil and PE, so their thickness is not a single value but the result of the synergy of all layers. Today, starting from the characteristics of composite aluminum foil products, we will sort out the core logic for determining thickness.
First, it is necessary to clarify the thickness unit and structural logic of composite aluminum foil bags. In the industry, "silk" (a common unit in Chinese packaging industry, 1 silk = 0.01 mm) is still widely used for expression. Unlike single-layer plastic films, the thickness of composite aluminum foil bags refers to the "total thickness", which is the sum of the thicknesses of all functional layers. For example, a conventional food-grade composite aluminum foil bag has a structure of "12μm PET (about 1.2 silks, outer layer for stiffness and wear resistance) + 7μm aluminum foil (about 0.7 silks, core barrier layer) + 50μm PE (about 5 silks, heat-sealing layer for leak prevention)", with a total thickness of 6.9 silks. This means that when discussing the thickness of composite aluminum foil bags, we should not only focus on the total value, but also understand the thickness ratio of each layer (especially the aluminum foil layer), as it directly determines the core performance of the bags.
1. By Product Weight: Coordinated Thickness Control of Aluminum Foil Layer and Heat-Sealing Layer
The load-bearing capacity of composite aluminum foil bags depends on the tensile resistance of the aluminum foil layer and the toughness of the heat-sealing layer (e.g., PE layer), which needs to be accurately matched according to the product weight:
- Lightweight products under 100g (e.g., small-bag coffee, health care capsules): No need for an overly thick structure. A total thickness of 5-6 silks is recommended, including a 7μm aluminum foil layer (0.7 silks) and a 30-40μm PE layer (3-4 silks). This thickness can not only protect products by virtue of the aluminum foil's barrier properties, but also control costs, making it suitable for mass-produced small packages.
- Medium-weight products (100-500g) (e.g., bagged nuts, vermicelli): A total thickness of 7-8 silks is suggested. The PE layer can be thickened to 50μm (5 silks) to enhance tear resistance, while the aluminum foil layer remains 7μm (0.7 silks) — optimal load-bearing requirements can be met by optimizing the heat-sealing layer without additional thickening of the aluminum foil.
- Heavy products (500-1000g) (e.g., large-bag flour, carton-packed fruit packaging): The total thickness needs to reach 9-10 silks. At this point, two measures can be taken simultaneously: first, increase the aluminum foil layer to 9μm (0.9 silks) to improve the overall structural strength; second, adjust the PE layer to 60μm (6 silks) to prevent the heat-sealing edge from breaking during handling.
- Overweight products over 1000g (e.g., industrial parts, large-bag feed): The total thickness must be more than 12 silks. The aluminum foil layer can be 12μm (1.2 silks), and a 15μm PET layer (1.5 silks) can be compounded to enhance the outer layer's stiffness. The PE layer should be 70μm (7 silks) to ensure no collapse or deformation during stacking.
2. By Product Size: Aluminum Foil Layer Stiffness Adapts to Large-Size Requirements
The larger the size and the stronger the three-dimensional sense of the composite aluminum foil bag, the higher the requirement for the stiffness of the aluminum foil layer — an overly thin aluminum foil layer may cause the bag to be "floppy" and unable to support the product shape, while an overly thick one may affect folding and sealing effects. Therefore, precise control is necessary:
- Small-size bags (e.g., 10cm×15cm seasoning bags): A total thickness of 5-6 silks is sufficient, with a 7μm aluminum foil layer, no additional stiffness enhancement required.
- Medium-size bags (e.g., 20cm×30cm snack bags): A total thickness of 7-8 silks is recommended. Keep the aluminum foil layer at 7μm and thicken the outer PET layer from 12μm to 15μm to improve stiffness.
- Large-size bags (e.g., fresh-keeping turnover bags over 30cm×40cm): The total thickness needs to be 10-12 silks. Increase the aluminum foil layer to 9-12μm and match it with a 15-20μm outer PET layer to ensure the bag does not deform easily when expanded and can withstand the pressure and friction of internal items.
3. By Special Product Properties: Aluminum Foil Layer Leads Barrier and Protection Functions
The core advantage of composite aluminum foil bags lies in the high barrier property and puncture resistance of aluminum foil. For products with special properties, the thickness of the aluminum foil layer or the composite structure needs to be adjusted to enhance corresponding performance:
- Fragile/sharp products (e.g., glass-bottled sauces, metal parts): Focus on puncture resistance. In addition to increasing the total thickness by 2-3 silks compared with conventional products, a 10μm nylon film (1 silk) can be added between the aluminum foil layer and the PE layer. Use a 9μm aluminum foil layer (0.9 silks) to achieve a total thickness of 10-11 silks, which can not only resist sharp edges by virtue of the aluminum foil's rigidity, but also enhance tear resistance through the nylon film.
- Powder/liquid products (e.g., protein powder, bagged beverages): Focus on leak prevention and sealing. Keep the aluminum foil layer at 7-9μm, thicken the inner PE layer from 50μm to 60-70μm, or compound a layer of EVOH barrier film (5-10μm), with a total thickness of 8-10 silks. Utilize the aluminum foil's sealing property and the inner layer's leak-proof property to avoid leakage.
- Sensitive products (e.g., fresh food, pharmaceuticals, high-oil food): Barrier property is the key. The protection level needs to be improved by thickening the aluminum foil layer — 7μm aluminum foil (0.7 silks) for ordinary food, 9μm (0.9 silks) for fresh food, and 12μm (1.2 silks) for pharmaceuticals. The corresponding total thickness is 8-10 silks and 10-12 silks, ensuring the oxygen transmission rate ≤ 0.1 cc/(m²·24h) and moisture transmission rate ≤ 0.5 g/(m²·24h) to extend the product shelf life.
4. Three Key Reminders for Selecting Composite Aluminum Foil Bag Thickness
- Reject the misconception that "thicker aluminum foil is better": Some customers believe that a thicker aluminum foil layer means better bag performance, but this is not true. For example, if small-packaged snacks use 12μm thick aluminum foil (1.2 silks), the bag will be too rigid, prone to wrinkles during sealing, and thus affect sealing performance. Moreover, aluminum foil has high costs, so excessive thickening will significantly increase packaging costs with extremely low cost-effectiveness.
- Total thickness ≠ simple superposition of layers: Micro-thickness loss (about 0.1-0.2 silks) occurs during the interlayer compounding of composite aluminum foil bags. The final product thickness must be subject to actual testing (we use a laser thickness gauge with an accuracy of 0.01 silks). For example, the theoretical thickness of "12μm PET + 9μm aluminum foil + 50μm PE" is 7.1 silks, and the actual finished product is about 7 silks, which is within the normal range.
- Professional manufacturers help you "precisely match layers": If you are unsure about the required aluminum foil layer thickness and total thickness for your products, you can directly provide product information (type, weight, storage conditions, shelf life requirements). We will combine more than 2,000 composite aluminum foil packaging cases, conduct "barrier simulation tests" and "load-bearing experiments" to customize the optimal layer structure (e.g., "PET/aluminum foil/nylon/PE") and thickness scheme for you, and even provide sample trials to ensure meeting your needs.
